Homemade Nesquik Chocolate Milk

If your kids get through chocolate milk as quickly as mine, it’s worth keeping a jar of this in the cupboard! My homemade Nequik chocolate milk takes just a few minutes to mix together, and anytime you want to make up a glass, all you need is a spoonful of the mix, a splash of hot water, and some cold milk. It’s such a fun after-school treat, it tastes just as good as the real thing, and it’s way cheaper to make a batch at home!

Test Kitchen Notes: The biggest difference I found when trying to get this as close to the real thing as possible was mixing the powder with a couple of tablespoons of hot water before adding the milk. It dissolves the cocoa completely, so you end up with smooth chocolate milk instead of a layer of powder sitting at the bottom of the glass. If you have a few extra minutes, blitzing the dry mix in a spice grinder also gives it an even finer texture that’s very close to the store-bought version.

Ingredients & Overview

The homemade chocolate milk mix itself is made with granulated sugar, cocoa powder, French vanilla powdered coffee creamer, and a pinch of salt.

When you’re ready for a glass, simply stir 1 tablespoon of the mix into a little hot water to dissolve it, then add cold whole milk for a smooth, creamy chocolate milk without any gritty cocoa at the bottom.

Recipe Notes & Tips

  • No coffee creamer? You can leave it out and stir ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract into each glass of chocolate milk instead. If you happen to have vanilla bean powder, you can use that in the dry mix, but it’s much more expensive and harder to find.
  • Make it richer: For an even deeper chocolate flavor, use dark cocoa powder or increase the powdered coffee creamer to ⅓ cup.
  • For an extra-smooth mix: If you’d like a finer powder, use superfine sugar (not powdered sugar) or give the finished mix a quick blitz in a spice grinder before storing it. It dissolves even more easily in the milk.
  • Use hot water first: Dissolving the mix in a couple of tablespoons of hot water before adding the milk helps prevent any cocoa from settling at the bottom of the glass.

Storage

Store the dry chocolate milk mix in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for up to 3 months. Give it a quick stir or shake before using if it has been sitting for a while.

Serving Ideas

Stir a spoonful into cold milk for a quick after-school treat or an easy afternoon pick-me-up. It’s also delicious warmed with hot milk on chilly evenings for a homemade hot chocolate.

This mix also makes a fun homemade gift. Spoon it into a glass jar, tie on a ribbon, and add a little tag with the mixing instructions for an easy holiday or hostess gift.
