10 Easy Chicken Dinner Recipes for Families
Chicken is probably the one thing I cook more than anything else, but that doesn’t mean I want to eat the same dinner every week. I’m always looking for recipes that earn a permanent spot in the rotation – meals that are easy enough for a Tuesday night but still feel like something everyone actually wants to eat.
That’s exactly what you’ll find here. Every recipe has been picked for a reason. There are one-pan dinners for nights when you don’t want a sink full of washing up, sheet pan meals with the sides cooked alongside the chicken, budget-friendly family favorites, comfort food classics, and quick dinners that get everyone fed without much effort.
Whether you’re cooking for fussy eaters, trying to stretch the grocery budget, or just wondering what to make with that pack of chicken in the fridge, these are the recipes I come back to again and again. I hope you love them!
Coconut Lime Chicken

If you’re looking for a one-pot dinner that’s a little different from the usual creamy chicken recipes, this is a great one to try. The coconut milk, fresh lime, garlic, and ginger make a silky sauce that’s perfect spooned over rice or mopped up with warm flatbreads. It feels fresh, comforting, and comes together with very little fuss.
Cajun Chicken Sausage & Rice

Chicken sausages are one of my favorite shortcuts for getting dinner on the table without spending a fortune. They add plenty of flavor with hardly any prep, making this Cajun chicken sausage and rice a great budget-friendly family meal. It’s mild enough for most kids to enjoy, while still having enough Cajun seasoning to keep the adults happy too.
Baked Sour Cream & Onion Chicken

This is proper comfort food for the nights when everyone wants something hearty. Tender baked chicken is coated in a creamy sour cream and onion sauce that’s made for spooning over a big pile of mashed potatoes. Add a simple green vegetable on the side and dinner’s sorted.
Honey Garlic Chicken

When you’re craving takeout but don’t want the cost or the wait, this honey garlic chicken is always a good shout. Everything cooks together in one pan, coated in a sticky, sweet-and-savory sauce that’s perfect with a bowl of rice. It feels like a Friday night treat, but it’s healthier, cheaper, and just as satisfying.
BBQ Chicken Thighs

This sheet pan dinner is made for busy evenings. BBQ chicken thighs roast alongside potatoes, corn, and green beans, so everything’s ready at the same time with hardly any washing up afterwards. It’s a complete family meal on one tray, which means no scrambling to throw together extra side dishes while the chicken cooks.
Shake & Bake Chicken

This homemade Shake and Bake chicken brings back all the nostalgia of the boxed version, but with simple pantry ingredients you probably already have. The breadcrumb coating bakes up golden and crispy in the oven or air fryer, making it an easy family dinner that’s hard to beat. Serve it with mashed potatoes, fries, or a few simple vegetables for a classic comfort food meal. Keep leftover mix in an airtight jar for up to 3 months to use again.

Air Fryer Instructions:
- Preheat the air fryer to 375°F.
- Place the coated chicken breasts in a single layer in the basket, leaving a little space between them. Cook in batches if needed.
- Air fry for 16–20 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and crisp and the internal temperature reaches 165°F.
Smothered Chicken

This is one of those family dinners that never goes out of style. Tender chicken breasts are smothered in a rich onion gravy and finished with crispy bacon for the ultimate comfort food. Serve it over mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles to make the most of every last spoonful of that sauce.
Serves: 4
Ingredients:
- 2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts (about 4–5 breasts)
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- ¾ cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon onion powder
- ½ tablespoon smoked paprika
- ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
- ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 3 tablespoons avocado oil
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 1½ cups chicken broth
- ¾ cup half and half
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 cup cooked bacon, chopped
- Fresh parsley, for serving (optional)
Instructions:
- Pat the chicken breasts dry with paper towels and season both sides with salt and pepper.
- In a shallow bowl, combine the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, and Italian seasoning. Set aside 3 tablespoons of the seasoned flour for the gravy.
- Coat each chicken breast in the flour mixture, pressing gently so it’s evenly covered.
- Heat the avocado oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the chicken for about 5 minutes per side, until golden. It doesn’t need to be cooked through at this stage. Transfer the chicken to a plate.
- Reduce the heat to medium and melt the butter in the same skillet. Add the sliced onion and cook for 5–8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and lightly caramelized.
- Sprinkle in the reserved seasoned flour and stir constantly for 1 minute.
- Gradually pour in the chicken broth, stirring well and scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Stir in the half and half and Worcestershire sauce, then bring the gravy to a gentle simmer.
- Return the chicken to the skillet and sprinkle the chopped bacon over the top. Simmer for 10–12 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and reaches 165°F in the thickest part.
- Spoon plenty of the onion gravy over the chicken, sprinkle with fresh parsley if you like, and serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles.
Sheet Pan Orange Chicken Legs

This is one of those sheet pan dinners that feels a little more exciting than your usual weeknight chicken. - Pour over the Japanese BBQ sauce and toss everything together until the rice is evenly coated.
- Return the chicken to the pan and cook for another 2–3 minutes, until everything is hot.
- Sprinkle over the sesame seeds and, if you like, finish with a handful of chopped scallions before serving.
