Avocado Chocolate Mousse
Hold up, let me explain. I know this sounds weird, but trust me when I say IT WORKS! I promise you, this doesn’t taste like avocado. Not even a little bit. Once it’s blended with cocoa powder, maple syrup, and vanilla, all you get is a rich, silky dairy-free chocolate mousse that just happens to be made with a handful of simple, good for you ingredients.

Here’s Why It Works:
Avocados have a naturally buttery texture, which makes them the perfect base for a creamy dessert. They don’t bring much flavor of their own, so the chocolate completely takes over. The result is a smooth, indulgent mousse that’s ready in minutes, with no cooking and very little effort.

Ingredients & Method Overview
Ripe avocados create an incredibly smooth, creamy texture, while cocoa powder brings all the rich chocolate flavor. Maple syrup adds just the right amount of sweetness, vanilla rounds everything out, and a pinch of salt makes the chocolate taste even richer.
There’s no cooking involved here, either. Everything simply goes into a blender or food processor and is blitzed until silky smooth. Once it’s chilled for a little while, the mousse thickens up beautifully and is ready to spoon into bowls with your favorite toppings.

Recipe Notes
- Use ripe avocados. They should give slightly when you press them. The riper they are, the smoother and creamier your mousse will be.
- Don’t worry—you can’t taste the avocado! The cocoa powder and maple syrup do all the heavy lifting, leaving you with a rich chocolate flavor. I want to stress this point because it’s true!
- Taste before serving. If you prefer a sweeter dessert, simply blend in a little more maple syrup until it’s just right for you.
- Honey works too. If you don’t need the recipe to be vegan, you can swap the maple syrup for honey. It gives the mousse a slightly different flavor, but it’s just as delicious.
- Blend until completely smooth. Scrape down the sides of your blender or food processor once or twice to make sure there aren’t any little pieces of avocado left behind.
- Chill before serving. Even 30 minutes in the fridge helps the mousse firm up and gives it an even silkier texture.

Storage Tips
This mousse is best enjoyed nice and fresh, but if you do have leftovers, they’ll keep well for a couple of days.
Transfer the mousse to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 2 days. To help stop the surface from browning, press a piece of plastic wrap directly onto the top before putting the lid on.
I don’t recommend freezing this one. The texture changes once thawed, so it’s much better made fresh and enjoyed within a day or two.

Serving Ideas
This mousse is lovely served just as it is, but a few simple toppings make it feel a little more special.
Fresh berries are always my first choice because they cut through the richness of the chocolate beautifully. If you’re serving it for guests, try adding a few chocolate shavings, a little grated orange zest, or a sprinkle of cocoa nibs for a bit of extra texture.
For an even more indulgent dessert, add a dollop of whipped cream or coconut cream on top, then finish with a handful of chopped hazelnuts, pecans, or pistachios. It looks impressive, but only takes a minute or two to put together.

Avocado Chocolate Mousse
Ingredients
- 3 ripe avocados
- ¼ cup cocoa powder
- ¼ cup maple syrup
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
- Scoop the flesh from the avocados into a blender or food processor.
- Add the cocoa powder, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt.
- Blend until the mixture is completely smooth and creamy, stopping to scrape down the sides if needed.
- Give it a taste and add a little more maple syrup if you'd like it sweeter, then blend again.
- Spoon the mousse into serving bowls or glasses.
- You can serve it straight away, but I like to chill it for 20-30 minutes first. It thickens up slightly and becomes even creamier.
